Windsor John, the Secretary General of the Asian Football Confederation, stated during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, the federation’s headquarters, that Iran is a member of the association and they want the team to play, adding that “according to our information, Iran will participate in the World Cup.” He added that “it is a very emotional moment, and everyone is saying many things. Ultimately, the Iranian Football Federation is the one that should decide whether they play or not, and even today they told us they are heading to the World Cup.”
Debate has flared up regarding the possibility of Iran’s participation in the World Cup, particularly following the joint American-Israeli attack on the country. Last week, US President Donald Trump welcomed the participation of the Iranian national team in the tournament despite the ongoing war, but noted, “I really don’t think it is appropriate for them to be there for their lives and safety.”
Last week, Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Dinya Mali stated that his country’s team would not participate in the World Cup under current conditions. However, the Iranian team, through its social media accounts, stated that its players still wish to participate, pointing out that the tournament is organized by FIFA and not by Trump or the United States. Iran is scheduled to play in Group 7 against Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand on the US West Coast.
