French President Emmanuel Macron stated in a post on the X platform that he emphasized the need for Iran to immediately halt its strikes against regional countries. He added that Iran must also ensure freedom of navigation by putting an end to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Macron did not provide details regarding his conversation with US President Donald Trump.
France has authorized the use of its military bases by American aircraft. The French leader reiterated to his Iranian counterpart his deep concern regarding Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programs, as well as its activities destabilizing the region, noting that the current crisis stems from these developments.
Macron stressed the necessity of guaranteeing the safety of French nationals Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, currently residing in the French embassy compound, and their return to France, describing this as an absolute priority.
The two French nationals were previously sentenced in October to 20 and 17 years in prison respectively on charges of spying for Israel, after being held for over three years. They were released in November and placed under house arrest within the French embassy in Tehran, with travel restrictions preventing them from leaving the country.
Separately, the French aircraft carrier “Charles de Gaulle” is heading towards the Mediterranean Sea.
