Senior officials at the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) have held discussions with executives from major companies, including General Motors and Ford Motor, regarding the production of weapons and military supplies. These talks reportedly began prior to the conflict with Iran.
Amid escalating conflicts during the Trump administration, the United States is seeking to increase its military spending. On Wednesday, White House Budget Director Russell Vought appeared before the House Budget Committee to discuss a proposed budget for fiscal year 2027. The proposal includes a $500 billion increase in military spending and a 10 percent reduction in non-defense programs.
This request represents a shift in priorities for the Republican Party ahead of the mid-term elections in November. The party, which includes former President Trump, hopes to retain control of both the House and the Senate. However, it faces growing public concern regarding living costs, energy prices, and the war in Iran.
Vought stated that he is unable to estimate the cost of the war with Iran while defending Trump’s request for an annual military budget of $1.5 trillion. The request faced criticism from lawmakers in both the Democratic and Republican parties, who expressed concerns about the lack of financial accountability within the Pentagon.
During the committee hearing, Vought remarked that “we are not ready to make a request to you. We are still working on it. We are determining what is needed. I do not have a rough estimate.”
The cost of the war in Iran, which began on February 28, remains a subject of debate in Congress. An initial request for an additional $200 billion in funding was met with strong opposition last month. Vice President Vance recently stated that President Trump seeks a comprehensive agreement with Iran to ensure it does not possess nuclear weapons.
