Officials have indicated that a proposal is under consideration to deploy a brigade from the “Rapid Response Force,” comprising approximately 3,000 soldiers. Additionally, staff elements would be sent to assist in planning and coordinating tasks within what is described as a “complex” battlefield environment.
These movements are characterized by officials as “precautionary planning.” They emphasized that neither the Pentagon nor the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has issued any executive orders to proceed. CENTCOM has declined to comment on the reports.
Proposed plans suggest the potential use of these forces to seize control of Jazah Island, which serves as a vital artery for Iranian oil exports.
Another option involves assigning approximately 2,500 Marines from the 31st Expeditionary Unit, currently en route to the region, to carry out the mission should directives be issued by the President.
Reports cited by former military leaders indicate that damage to the airstrip on Jazah Island from recent American strikes may prioritize the use of Marines. This is due to the combat engineers’ ability to rapidly repair the infrastructure, paving the way for C-130 cargo planes to transport supplies and reinforcements.
Planners are currently balancing the 82nd Airborne Division’s ability to deploy quickly—within 18 hours—against their lack of heavy armor and machinery needed to repel a potential Iranian counterattack. In contrast, the Marines possess engineering capabilities but lack the depth of “sustainability” provided by Army forces.
