Ma Xingrui, a member of the Central Committee, served as the Party Secretary for the Xinjiang region in northwestern China from 2021 to 2025. Previously, he held the position of director of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission and Deputy Party Secretary in Guangdong province.
China is intensifying its ongoing anti-corruption efforts by purging current members of the Politburo, the decision-making body of the ruling Communist Party. The specific nature of the alleged violations by Ma has not yet been disclosed, although he is a senior official being removed from his post this year.
Ma was replaced in July of last year by Shen Xiaoguang as the Party Secretary for Xinjiang, a region internationally known for a years-long campaign of detention outside judicial processes. This investigation follows the probe into another Politburo member and China’s top military commander, Zhang Youxia, in January, as well as the expulsion of He Weidong last year, which reduced the Politburo’s size from 24 to 23 members.
His last known public appearance was during the Fourth Plenary Session of the Central Committee in late October. Since then, he has been absent from official broadcast coverage of several key events, including the annual session of the legislature last month.
