Ryan Routh, convicted in September of five charges including an attempt on the life of a presidential candidate, has been sentenced to life in prison as requested by the prosecution. Judge Aileen Cannon determined that life imprisonment is the appropriate penalty to protect society from future crimes by Routh. Immediately after the verdict, Routh attempted to stab himself with a pen but was physically restrained by guards. Routh pleaded not guilty and defended himself during the trial, denying any intent to harm Trump or others. He was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service on September 15, 2024, while armed near the golf course where Trump was playing. This case follows the assassination attempt against Trump in July 2024, in which he survived a shooting during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
