The Commissioner noted that the lives of many in Lebanon have been turned upside down amid a wider conflict in the Middle East, as the number of registered internally displaced persons within the country exceeded 667,000, marking an increase of 100,000 people in a single day. Citing government statistics, the Commission reported that approximately 120,000 people are living in government-designated shelters, while others continue to search for accommodation. UN Representative in Lebanon, Carolin Lindholm Billing, stated that while others have stayed with relatives or friends or are still seeking housing, the situation is evident with cars parked along streets and individuals sleeping on sidewalks. On Monday, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that the escalation of hostilities has forced nearly 700,000 people to flee their homes in Lebanon. The conflict in the Middle East expanded to Lebanon starting March 2nd, following the launch of rockets by a Tehran-backed group at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Israel has since conducted widespread airstrikes in Lebanon and infiltrated its forces into southern Lebanon. The Israeli army warned residents to evacuate the southern suburbs and a vast area of southern Lebanon, as well as parts of the eastern Beqaa Valley, all of which are considered strongholds of Hezbollah. More than one million people have been displaced from their homes in Lebanon during the 2024 war between Hezbollah and Israel.
