The Trump administration has denied inciting or supporting the protests against the Iranian regime, though U.S. officials confirmed that approximately 6,000 Starlink devices were secretly dispatched to the country. The goal was to maintain communication with opposition figures following the authorities’ decision to block internet access nationwide.
Officials explained that the State Department purchased nearly 7,000 Starlink devices, operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, in recent months. The equipment was intended to help activists bypass the digital restrictions imposed by Tehran. This shipment represents the first time the United States has delivered Starlink hardware directly to Iran, according to reports. Furthermore, it was noted that funds previously earmarked for internet freedom initiatives in Iran were redirected to finance the purchase of these devices.
While officials stated that former President Trump was aware of the delivery, they could not confirm whether he personally approved the operation. Tehran has accused Washington of fueling public anger and interfering in its internal affairs by backing the demonstrations that swept the country last month amid economic and social hardship. Despite Washington’s official denial of interference, the delivery of the equipment indicates that the administration provided “significant support” to the protesters.
Many Iranian citizens utilized Starlink to communicate with the outside world and broadcast video footage documenting the protests and ensuing unrest. However, Iranian authorities managed to disrupt the service by jamming it using high-tech military equipment.
