The coordinated military operation conducted by the United States and Israel, resulting in the death of former Iranian leader Ali Khamenei and several senior officials, has sparked debate regarding the role of Vice President J.D. Vance. Vance publicly defended President Donald Trump’s decision to initiate military action against Iran, despite previously criticizing American foreign interventions. Sources indicate that during the period preceding the decision, Vance expressed skepticism and concern regarding the potential success of the operation.

A senior administration official revealed through a text message that Vance was “skeptical,” “concerned about success,” and “fundamentally opposed” to the war at that time. Another official noted that Vance’s role is to present all perspectives to the President, and that he has fully backed the administration’s decision now that it has been made.

His previous doubts about American military engagement and his calm tone regarding operational success have fueled speculation of a rift between him and the President. This is not the first time Vance has differed with Trump on military matters. When the US struck Houthi targets last year, he reportedly described the move as a mistake in a private message via the Signal app.

Trump acknowledged a philosophical difference with his vice president, stating Vance was less enthusiastic about military action. Vance’s spokesperson stated that the vice president, who serves on the National Security Council, keeps his private views with the President. Vance himself did not elaborate on the difference.

An insider close to Vance noted that he believed swift action was necessary to prevent American casualties due to leaked plans. Since the strikes began, Vance has adhered to supporting the administration’s military objectives without repeating Trump’s optimistic rhetoric, such as declaring a victory.

In an interview, Vance stated that Trump would not enter a long-term conflict without a clear end goal. He emphasized that the objective of destroying Iran’s nuclear capabilities aims to prevent the US from falling into similar entanglements as in Iraq and Afghanistan.

While publicly supporting the operation codenamed “Epic Rage,” Vance maintains a history of skepticism and criticism towards American foreign interventions, particularly involving Iran.
