Officials confirmed that the aircraft carrier USS Tripoli, currently stationed in Japan and carrying Marine forces, is en route to the region. Reports indicate that approximately 2,500 Marines are aboard at least three vessels heading towards the Middle East. This force is identified as a naval expeditionary unit comprising roughly 2,500 Marines and sailors.
The request for these reinforcements originated from US Central Command. Reports indicate that the deployment involves the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which was ordered to move from the Pacific to the Middle East. This unit consists of approximately 2,200 Marines deployed on three amphibious assault ships.
Military analysts note that deploying this unit does not necessarily imply an intent to conduct a ground invasion of Iran. Instead, it provides ground, amphibious, and air capabilities that commanders can utilize if the situation demands it. The unit includes a squadron of F-35 fighter jets and a squadron of MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.
